About: Step into the world of the Prince Bishops of Durham, some of the most powerful and influential figures in medieval England. For centuries, these religious leaders held sway over both the secular and spiritual realms of the North of England, sometimes rivalling the monarchs themselves. It was said that during the Middle Ages, there were two kings in England – one sat in London with a crown, while the other sat in Durham with a mitre. This 8-hour tour will take you through the historic sites that tell the story of these extraordinary figures.

Your journey begins at Durham Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most stunning examples of Norman architecture in the UK. Explore the cathedral that served as the seat of the Prince Bishops, where you’ll learn about their immense power and influence in both the religious and political spheres of medieval England.

After visiting Durham Cathedral, we’ll stop for lunch, offering a chance to relax and reflect on the day’s discoveries. Then, we’ll continue our tour to Auckland Castle, home to the Prince Bishops for centuries. Today, it is famous for the Auckland Project, an internationally acclaimed arts and heritage project. At Auckland Castle, you’ll explore the historic site and visit the Faith Museum, which tells the fascinating story of Christianity’s journey in the British Isles.

This tour offers a unique opportunity to step into the world of the Prince Bishops, uncovering their remarkable legacy and their role in shaping the history of the North of England.
