About: The North East of England is a region steeped in a rich and diverse religious heritage, where the story of faith unfolds through ancient rock art, standing stones, and the rise of Christianity, spanning centuries of cultural and spiritual transformation. On this 8-hour tour, you’ll explore the fascinating journey of belief, from Roman religion through to the Christian heritage of saints, miracles, and churches that shaped this region.
Roman Religion (AD 43 - AD 410)
The tour begins with the spiritual landscape of Roman Britain. The Roman Empire ruled for 346 years, bringing a host of gods, cults, and faiths to the British Isles. These belief systems often coexisted or clashed with each other. We’ll take you on a journey through Roman religious sites, visiting the remains of Roman temples and forts that once stood side by side, providing insight into the complex and layered spiritual practices of the Romans in Britain.
Anglo-Saxon Beliefs (AD 410 - AD 1066)
Following the fall of the Roman Empire, a new wave of people from Northern and Central Europe arrived, bringing their own beliefs. Within just a hundred years, these Anglo-Saxon settlers embraced Christianity, a transformation that significantly impacted the culture of Britain and Europe. We’ll delve into this fascinating period of religious change in the North East, uncovering how Christianity spread and began to influence both local and global history.
Medieval Faith (AD 1066 - AD 1485)
In the medieval period, Christianity became firmly entrenched in the North East. We’ll visit Escomb Church, one of the oldest churches in the British Isles, likely built between 670 AD and 685 AD. From here, we’ll journey to Durham, a city renowned for its religious significance. You’ll explore the awe-inspiring Durham Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in the world. Discover how this cathedral and the city became a focal point of faith in the region, serving as a center of worship, pilgrimage, and learning for centuries.
